When it is cold and rainy outside, there can be nothing better than a mug of hot chocolate. For those of us who don’t own a fancy coffee machine or a milk frother, it’s difficult to achieve cafe style hot chocolate at home. But I decided that shouldn’t stop me from having a decent mug of hot cocoa!
- heat-proof jar (like an old jam jar)
- 1 mug of full cream milk
- pinch of cinnamon powder
- 2 teaspoons good cocoa powder (I just used baking cocoa)
- sugar to taste
- 100 ml heavy whipping cream whipped with 1 teaspoon cocoa powder (this mix will keep in the fridge for a few days)
Warm the milk in a pot on the stove. Once bubbling, take the pot off the heat pour half the milk into the jar. Add cocoa powder, sugar and cinnamon into the jar. Leave to cool for a couple of minutes. Cover the jar and shake well. This will ‘froth up the milk’.
Pour the milk from the pot into a mug, add the cocoa mixed milk. Top with a teaspoon of the chocolate whipped cream and dust with some extra cocoa on top. Enjoy!
If you don’t have a jar, DON’T be tempted to use a plastic container. I tried it, and the outcome wasn’t pretty.
